LARVAL HOST PLANTS AND OTHER HOSTS OF INDIAN BUTTERFLIES

This annotated and referenced checklist of the larval host plants and other hosts of Indian butterflies is based on Nitin et al. (2018. Journal of Threatened Taxa, 10:11495–11550; and uploaded on this website on 2018/04/17). It is continually updated as new records are contributed, or missing hosts are pointed out to us. It is arranged alphabetically by family, subfamily, tribe and genus names for easy reference. The authors of Nitin et al. are currently listed as authors. Contributors who contribute individual records will be given as a reference for those records, and people who contribute in a major way, such as by contributing new records on an order of dozens of records or other kinds of large dataset, will be added as authors of the entire page at the bottom of this page. So please contribute to this growing and continually updated, very valuable database.

  15. Baracus hampsoni Elwes & Edwards, 1897 — Spotted Hedge Hopper: Poaceae (Davidson et al. 1897; Bell 1926; Robinson et al. 2010), Imperata cylindrica (Kalesh & Prakash 2015). This is often treated as a subspecies of Baracus vittatus (C. Felder, 1862). Another subspecies name, Baracus vittatus gotha Evans, 1949, has appeared in literature. Nothing is known about this taxon beyond the two females (one of them the type) collected in the Anamalais, on which the original description was based (Evans 1949). This name most likely represents a hybrid between hampsoni and subditus, or an aberration of subditus.
  16. Baracus subditus Moore, [1884] — Striped Hedge Hopper: Poaceae (Davidson et al. 1897; Bell 1926; Robinson et al. 2010), Imperata cylindrica (Kalesh & Prakash 2015). This is often treated as a subspecies of Baracus vittatus (C. Felder, 1862).

Licuala chinensis (Kunte 2006) (Arecaceae). Cyperus alternifolius (Cyperaceae) has also been reported from Bengaluru by L. Shyamal, which constitutes a new plant family record for this species (BOI-ag954 to BOI-ag958) (Saji et al. 2018). It remains to be seen whether Cyperus is used more widely by this species, and a second confirmation of this larval host family will be useful. Apart from these plants, Saccharum officinarum (Poaceae) is recorded (Robinson et al. 2010) but this is doubtful and needs confirmation. Zingiber officinale (Zingiberaceae) has also been recorded once (Kalesh & Prakash 2007), but the larva feeding on it did not pupate so we do not know whether this is a suitable larval host plant.
